I went from a small, family-vibe firm to a high-powered, suit-and-tie kind of place. Honestly, I'm struggling to keep up with the pace and the cutthroat atmosphere. Anyone else have a major adjustment period after switching firms?

… cutthroat? What do you mean by that?

Best way to keep up is to improve, but that takes time. You’ll get better.

Although I certainly wouldn’t describe my current firm as a “suit-and-tie kind of a place” or the atmosphere as “cutthroat,” I have experienced a similar kind of culture shock moving from a close-knit family type of firm to a larger and more impersonal firm. To be honest I hate the new role and the overt lack of personal interest that the firm has towards its employees and its employees towards each other. While I like the higher pay, the days feel longer and the work is somehow less fulfilling.

Yeah, maybe cuttrhoat was the wrong word, but I feel like there's an ultra-competitive and impersonal atmosphere that absolutely wasn't there at my last firm.

For Plaintiff's attorneys, how big is your caseload? What kind of cases are the majority of them and are they in suit? I am currently handling 150+ mostly MVAs and premise liability cases, just about all in suit, (on top of about 10 DUIs and other small traffic matters) and I feel like I'm drowning and looking to jump ship. What is normal/to be expected? In NYC area if that matters

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. Write every kind of brief, appeals, argue motions, take depos. Am the only associate working directly under partner on all cases. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.

4th year at a mid size PI firm. Got pulled from litigating MVAs to help this solo we hired start a med Mal/nursing home practice. 1 year in and it looks like I’m two steps backwards in terms of getting paid because we’re a year or more out from a lot of the fees hitting. I respect the solo a lot, he’s a mentor, but I’ve got kids and I gotta get paid. Trying not to burn bridges, but I can’t wait years to get cut in. Advice?
