It's basic requirement in your resume now. Recruiters filter by it.
Late response, sorry. Most law schools don't have decent privacy classes, and you'd be surprised how ignorant a lot of lawyers can be to privacy issues. The CIPP demonstrates a basic understanding and, at the very least, an interest in the field.
If you care enough to dedicate the week or however long it takes to get that certification, it shows a lot more to me than the 15 mins you spent writing your cover letter.
Also, especially for lawyers, it affirms that you at least know more than just HIPAA. IAPP is trash and old news to us in the field, but those not familiar don't even know it exists
You'll run into a lot of these over the years for various other certs.
The only thing it really demonstrates is your ability to pay money and memorize text.
If you just use the site for 20m a day- the level of content, comparison privacy law grids and white papers are usually very good. Not sure about why the cert doesn't seem to be of value - bc I think it is but it doesn't mean you shoe in. It's a leveler and then it's about applying it. My 2c
