I hit total burnout - I didn’t leave the profession but went in house. I’m in IP and my company outsources all prosecution work - so I now do more consulting and liaison work using my YOE in foreign and domestic prosecution. It was the perfect change.
OP - The best advice I ever received was to start pursing new opportunities like my male counterparts.
If you satisfy 80% of the requirements and genuinely believe you would be a good fit, apply! The worst that can happen is they don’t offer you a position.
After a long career as a biglaw litigation paralegal, I took an in-house position managing governance and legal matters for a privately owned corporation. Best decision of my life. I have autonomy in my work and an employer who appreciates and rewards my contributions. It may take a while to find that unicorn job, but it is worth the effort. Good luck!
Those I know who have been happiest after they left were those who went in-house or switched to something creative (culinary school, music, etc.)
I also felt the same way after 20 years of working in Litigation within a law firm environment. Needed a change, and looked into other areas but being newly divorced after 30 years of marriage, I decided to stick with the years of experience in legal and took a Senior Corporate Paralegal job with a Global Company - no billables/timesheet, no stressful law firm environment, and MORE money! Best decision ever! I recommend Corporate or Intellectual Property areas - more money and a much better environment, WLB!!
Thank goodness I had the Paralegal experience to back me up and the ability to take a higher-paying job after my divorce! Make sure to always keep your skills up, have a job, and keep your independence even if you are in a good marriage - I was in a great marriage...until 30 years hit!
Best of luck!
I’m trying to get into corporate work from trusts and estates and it seems that (so far) I am type casted as just a TE paralegal…. I didn’t actively look into TE work I was placed at my role as an admin and worked my way up (or they promoted me after everyone quit so that I wouldn’t leave).
I have been looking in house and they ghost after an interview or two
Or look at contracts manager positions.
I am considering becoming a flight attendant. Or at least pick up a trade (I don’t know which one yet).
I know two paralegals at different stages in life who took this route - they both LOVE it!
I’m at this same juncture; I have been in-house for 20 years and the pay is well above my current local market. I’m not regularly challenged and I’m trying to decide when my next move could be before I’m aged out of switching positions/fields. The next step in this company would be PL manager but everyone in those spots are just a few years older than I am so that would likely be a long wait.

I’m burnt out after 19+ years, so seek positions that you will enjoy that pay more. I’ve been applying for executive assistant positions at large Firms or corporations and the pay is better and the skills are transferrable.
