I moved to the Middle East a couple years back.
I miss the U.S. a lot… It would depend on which state you live in. I’m born and raised in the DMV area, and miss the nature, 4 seasons weather, organized traffic, and higher quality people overall (statistically). Certain states in the U.S. are hard to beat elsewhere. That said, it’s safer in the Middle East and closer to the rest of the world.
I would recommend not to move, unless you’re single and just want to explore. The U.S. is really not as bad as folks that live there think it is (literally first world problems)
Expect to get paid half ad much or more than half as much for work outside the US.
Not all ‘somewhere else’ would be the same. Do you have some specific countries in mind?
The US is very diverse, New York, Seattle, LA and Miami are 4 very different cities.
The world is also very diverse, for example if you want to work in France, I hope you can speak French. Working at a high level and dealing with executives requires an understanding of business French which is different from casual French. Learning a language helps.
There is a huge difference between living somewhere vs visiting. My suggestion is to stay somewhere for at least a month and make sure you can go everything like getting groceries, finding s doctor, dentist, getting s prescription filled. You may not need it all today but it helps to be prepared.
If you want to test things out, try for s role in Canada. It’s similar but different enough.
I've lived in the UK, Ireland, and Canada. I've settled in Canada. I would pick any of the 3 over the US. They all have their own unique challenges, but I found the quality of life to be better even if the salaries are less.
Where did you live in the U.S.?
I've lived in Germany, Egypt, Canada, and the United States. Honestly, I think your happiness depends on your outlook. Everybody complains everywhere. Everybody has problems everywhere. You can choose to be happy or miserable literally anywhere.
Some people’s whole identity is being miserable about the popular thing to be miserable about.
