If you were over 40, had 2 kids under 5, lived in NYC, but were dying to move to burbs (specifically CT to be a little closer to family)…how would you go about confidently doing that, given our volatile AF industry?

I’m so so sick of being afraid of the other shoe dropping, but it keeps dropping EVERYWHERE! I just want to look at trees on a regular basis and have the kids play in grass that isn’t covered in dog or human poop.

What made you finally take the leap?

The city is cool when you don’t have kids. After that, it’s hell. Love me some boring burb life.

Run don’t walk to the burbs!! The city is a dumpster these days! I didn’t want my kids growing up in the city and couldn’t have been more thrilled waking up to the sound of birds vs screaming drunks outside our apartment! I had all these visions of taking my kids to the museums and shows… no, we were in our tiny apartment all day. Now I can open my doors and know my kids are safe and can play outside with a bit of independence.

Get a home loan / car loan now while you have a job. Despite having insane cash flow, it’s tough getting a loan as a freelancer/consultant.

Lived in Manhattan my whole life and moved to the burbs during Covid. The most important thing is picking the right town. We considered schools, commute, diversity (of people and what they do for a living), crime, and restaurants before making a decision where we wanted to live.

I’m in the same boat as you but I was also born and raised in NYC. Central Brooklyn is suburban enough for me. I just know me and my family will be bored really fast if we moved outside of the city. But do what’s best for you.

we sold our place in Brooklyn and were able to pay cash for our home in the burbs. We can still go into the city to visit whenever we want and of course, I go into Work a couple days a week. The security of not having a mortgage payment makes me feel better Financially. my only advice is to pick your town carefully.

Starting a new job next week (unlimited PTO), and just had some plans for the summer get finalized (family vacation and two weddings). It’s about 2 weeks in total - one extending July 4 week, an extended weekend in late Aug, and a week in October. Do I email my manager about all this now, or wait until next week once I’ve started?? The plans just got finalized today, and I accepted the offer a month ago.
