Hold companies liable for any negative externalities that can be attributed to the platform. If you can track what people are posting and serve them ads based on it, you can also take down things that could cause physical and mental harm to people
Likes and comments are private, no followers/following numbers, get rid of influencers

I’ve read that the majority of seriously dangerous right wing violence/terror/white supremacy conversation is in private fb groups and not public (including things like Qanon), I think getting rid of that feature could be helpful

BLM… the statement? Phrase? Organization? Which one? BLM isn’t one central organization, the same way antifa isn’t. It’s just a way to project against one particular group, because then when one person does something egregious you can say “BLM does this” or “BLM represents this” but BLM is kind of a general statement and very broad I’ll defined movement with loads of groups identifying as “BLM”.
Misinformation should be targeted with a community-based approach to fact checking. Govt regulation and investment into media literacy. The West can learn a lot from Taiwan https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/11/11/political-disinformation-taiwan-success/
Remove: comment feature, link sharing
I agree with this. Do you think people would still use it if they can’t comment?

I told this to Facebook a decade ago when I interviewed. Surprise surprise that they didn't listen.
A dislike / disagree button. Currently, all of the emotions are positive. Which only counts one half of sentiment making and giving the impression that everyone agrees with you. It puts undue burden on people having to comment with names displayed in order to disagree. The like button's psychological power has single handedly created the entitlement, privileged opinions and algorithmic mess that is the machine learning mess of social media.

.
Automatically block comments if they just blanket insult someone rather than trying to engage in a discussion.

Applicable to the broader internet as well but people will advertise whoever pays them for stuff they don’t even use and feel like they have no liability. Now instead of it being social, about sharing you, it’s about sharing someone or something else to get paid. Also the Instagram shopping tab.

Limit replies to 1 (better) or 2 (max) per thread with unlimited text and no link sharing to media articles, only bibliographic references to published journals, books, and other materials and no personal or character attacks.
Therefore, ideas have to stand on their own and since you only have one chance to provide commentary, some will opt for thinking fast with witty responses and others will think slow with thoughtful responses.

KPMG - appreciate your humility and self reflection. To be clear, my “ohh interesting” was genuine and thanks for stretching my brain a little today. Appreciate the thought exercise, friend.
C2, this is a really good point.
Perhaps extend the same limit on responses to the subthread or make those conversations private or limited to a smaller number of mutually opted in people.
I also thought the suggestion above to eliminate “likes” and “influencer” status were good ideas as well.

I like this and I get where you’re going with it. One of the things I personally struggle with: I don’t actually know where the line is.
I want to reduce the impact and exposure of negativity, inflammatory responses, unsubstantiated information stated as fact... but reducing audience runs right into my desire to prevent an echo chamber.
How do we create a space that encourages discussion without encouraging overconfidence?
Radical big-brother-ish idea: there are no anonymous social media accounts (all verified by a centralized blah blah) and your employer can look up your feed and scrape your data.
Would people feel limited in what they can say? You bet and maybe they should. Also, this is not censorship, because you can say whatever you want, there just might be consequences...just like free speech in the constitution.
Your turn, friend. Come poke holes.
No algorithmic newsfeeds to start. Chronological only.
More positivity. Tired of doomscrolling
Instead of “love” and “laugh” reactions, introduce reactions related to logical biases. React with 👨🌾 for straw man, for example.
G1, like holding Google liable for censoring and manipulating search results (censoring, demonetizing, labeling, and shadow banning) in a non transparent biased way?
Anyone on the right wing and people who repost Son of Baldwin. The rest can stay.

This thread went from very interesting to super dumb overnight. Listen to yourselves begging for authoritarianism governed by a few “ethical” people.
Seriously stupid.
