If you’re speaking with a recruiter, what’s the best way to find out what the max salary is? I always ask if they have a range they can share which usually works. But I wonder if there’s a better way.

Seems like your method is the most direct way. But remember, the top of that range is never what is paid…especially to a new hire. Most will end up in the middle area and this is so there is room for annual increases.

Some others on this thread have suggested to ask clarifying questions about who falls at the lower or higher ends of the range

If you are in NY by law they have to give you the actual salary band for the position. It should already be on the job description.

Yes true, I have seen that on NYC job posts. The ranges are huge though

Most offers will be below and near the mid point of the range.

That makes sense

Honestly I would just ask them. I usually ask what the range is for the role and they will tell you. But you could just say what is the maximum amount that this role pays?

That’s good wording

When I talk salary with recruiters I just ask if the number they shared is the hiring range, or the full range for the role. I also use it as an opportunity to ask what differentiates someone at the lower end from someone at the higher end, and sniff test whether there's actually any chance of someday getting to that max.

That’s a good point to clarify, thanks!

Hi all,

After the final interview, HR reached out and said they would like to extend an offer. HR gave a ball park of 135k - 145k base with about 15k in sign-on equity and 20k annual bonus.

After a couple of days, HR person came back with with 125k base and 20k annual bonus. No sign-on equity anymore. What should I do given that these numbers seem way lower than the initial range provided? HR claimed it’s because of “market conditions”.
