I’m 22 and make 76K/year. I feel like I’m falling behind the ball. All I do is work and go on walks and sleep and do it all over again. This isn’t the life I want but I know I’m very privileged. Is this it?

It doesn’t have to be.

You described the rat race and that is what your life will be if you just chase promotions and higher comp. But if you focus on WLB/pursuing your passions, you can get out of the rat race.

76k at 22. Count your blessings. Most people dream of that.

A week? Id say two or three

You know the median annual US income for an individual is less than $40k, right?

At 22, with this salary, you have a very bright future ahead of you. You just need to find what you’re passionate about outside of work and spend time doing that. Sulking about it won’t fix it.

I made 35k out of undergrad at 24 and was in the same boat. Try hobbies, take on side projects where you can learn a different skill set, look for a job where you have a higher earning potential.

likesmart

Not really? You're 22 and working as a consultant. You'll probably trade this for a job paying as much or more as you're currently getting + better work-life balance over time.

Then after that you'll use that work-life balance to build a social network. Maybe find somebody you like. Also build a few hobbies. Maybe you'll like reading, or boats, or woodworking, or volunteerism.

I started pre pandemic in 2018 and I loved this job. Now that we’re all wfh full time… I think I hate this job. I would have been so confused about my career if I started during the pandemic.

Wait until you’re 26 and doing the same things but can feel 30 coming around

funny

AD 1 I don’t need to wait. I’m already dead on the inside so I’m basically there

Pretty much. Try to do some spontaneous things when you can.

same boat. don’t make enough $ to enjoy any time off. no savings, no potential for savings. feel like i’m trapped in this cycle till i reach a certain level and salary and can finally put significant money away — to do things like travel, along with other creative pursuits

My first job at that age out of school (not that long ago) was 50k, so in some sense you are doing perfectly fine. But yes you have to find ways to break out of the drudgery

Life only gets more complicated so if you're bored with zero responsibilities you're in for a rough road.

Ehhh I disagree; sometimes the environment just isn’t super stimulating and that can cause a bit of a rut. On the other end, OP could be feeling burnt out from the sounds of it too. There are a lot of reasons we feel “bored” with seemingly nothing in the way.

Dude you are 22 and finally have a salary. Go out and do things

Yes. This is pretty much the entire rest of your life. If you keep down this path. You'll make more money but nothing else will change

Early 30s here, married and 1 kid. Nice HHI but it really doesn't change much. It just shows how much it is true to say that work and money won't make you happy.

I have been working remotely since covid getting nothing but positive reviews. My company is not remote friendly and is now telling me I have to return to the office or I lose my job. I just found out a co-worker had a remote position created for them, without a job posting, without an interview and without the experience required (normally a license or certification would be mandatory). I understand life isn’t fair but is there an ethical problem with this?

Been seeing this guy for 1 year now. I just became an American citizen so have been getting more into politics. I lean left but the guy I’m seeing leans more conservative. He treats me so well and we get along great. Yes we disagree about topics but have respectful conversations and have both become more open minded. He doesn’t think it’s an issue. I feel like the media and the judgement of dating someone on the right is getting to me & making me have negative sabotaging thoughts. Any advice?
