This post is sad on so many levels..
@OP you are kind of embarrassing us with this post 🤦🏽♀️
I’m 33 and a senior EM. Should I just quit now that I’m a senior citizen and life is basically over
Just did a career restart as an EM at 31 after already consulting for 9 years. I definitely do feel old since most EMs here tend to be 24 to 26
I think at this point the q is do you want to work in services and “stay” partner vs. making partner.
If you don’t want to continue on this career long run, then moving is probably the best move. If you do want to stay in this career and enjoy it, 1-2 years will mean absolutely nothing.
Frankly it does become hard because the most obvious exits are other professional services firms which is why people bounce around. There are obviously the usual sr. Strategy and transformation roles which are the most common, but still aren’t all that common. Very few partners get handed an execution role of any sort.
Minor add, if you are far more flexible with comp and ego more options may exist, but no one hustles to make mbb partner and then end with a 30% paycut.
Again, this is why I put the bare minimum in. You are disposable to these companies. Never forget that.
OP I know it is hard! How long have you been an AP?
My struggles are a bit different - we are definitely on a treadmill as an AP than we’d be as 1-2Y Ps. I’m in similar age group as you, have been putting off life and kids to get to P to start everything else. If it doesn’t happen this time, I’m leaving. There is no other way and this is no way to live life
So evaluate trade-offs very carefully and see what works for you in life. I have come so close that I know I’m operating as P and if a bunch of ppl choose to vote against, that’ll not stop me from making a great great career outside where SPs at MBB would be wanting to get on my calendar desperate
Good luck
OP, just try to go for partner in 2 years. I assume exit ops in 2 years will be better than they are now since the recession will be over.
How badly do you want it?
Coach
Even just a consultant at McKinsey is very successful.
Op , what’s your title now ?
Lol , Ofcourse someone from BCG is jealous about my comments about McK.
Why bring age into this OP? If you truly deserve it then you’ll get it when it’s time.
Make them tell you no.
This post sums up America's failures in a modern economy
Just know that there is a lot of luck at play for making partner. It’s not all about your skill. So much could happen (eg your sponsors leave the firm).
P2, what makes a crappy partner? Curious. Every one I have worked with is either super smart or great with people/relationships
