Define iffy hours. You almost certainly can’t coast 3+ years unless you make two moves between now and 5th year
If you’re willing to do enough work to make hours, that’s probably doable. If you want to work less than bonus requirements probably not until 5th year
Coach
Your first 5 years are for grinding your keister off. Not for making hours, but because you do not know how to practice yet. I’m willing to bet that’s why you’re mediocre- you’re not putting enough effort into this.
To be clear: I’m not suggesting that you live to work, give it 100%, be loyal, etc etc. To h*ll with employers. This is advice is strictly about being selfish and doing what’s best for you in the long run. We do not know what real impact AI is going to have, but we can reasonably foresee a lot of “easy hours” disappearing. You need to future-proof yourself.

You’re changing facts on us. Are you mediocre or average? Those are 2 different things.
This isn’t an ego thing, you need to be able to accurately assess how you stack up compared to others in order to tailor your next steps.
I made it to my 8th year but I reallllly put in the hours up until about my 4th year when I had my first kid. Then I pretty much “coasted” (barely hitting my hours for bonus) until my 8th year when I went in house on my own volition. There was another paternity leave mixed in there too.
Getting a rep as a grinder and team player early on really pays dividends down the line.
It’s doable but tricky
If you’re mediocre now what makes you think you can be a solid associate til 5th year now? Just being honest. It’s biglaw, you’re gonna be cranking if you want to learn and/or have prospects of advancing
Same boat but less than “iffy” hours 😂
