I’m a true night-owl that begins thinking clearly about 5 PM. I often send projects out after midnight. Early morning emails and calls are an adventure. Has anyone else had to work through this issue? Fight it or embrace it?

As long as you're ok with people not being on your schedule. I once worked with a team of night owls and they never understood why I didn't get back to them immediately after 10 p.m.

like

Yes, this is 100% me. I’ve come to terms with it, some people just have an off circadian rhythm. It’s literally in (certain) people’s genes (genetic mutation can change the timing of a person’s biological clock). I used to use the delayed send email feature, but I had a couple issues with it where it didn’t send - so now I just stuff out at whatever crazy hour I’m working.

like

I’m with you on this. Anytime I have a project that requires a ton of focus I normally get it done at night. It’s harder to concentrate during the day when you’re getting tons of emails and calls coming in. However, it’s unfair to expect other people to be on that schedule as well.

like

This is a big part of it. Calls and emails and urgent type stuff during the day.

Yeah, as a partner I think it depends on your expectations, and a nicer night owl partner would be more cautious to clarify that things are not urgent if they want associates to like them.

I’ve worked with night owl partners that I felt respected my time and really enjoyed working with. When there were urgent things I needed feedback on they pulled it together to do that during humane hours. I have friends who work with a notorious night owl partner in another office, however, who is an absolute nightmare because he expects associates to be on his schedule and basically torments them all night long for no good reason just because that’s when he wants to work.

like

Embrace it and use delay delivery so your emails show up during daytime hours and people think you’re online during the day.

like

Embrace. I’ve been coming in to the office around 10:30-11:00 AM for the past few years. Everyone just came to terms with it, including all equity partners.

The only issue are clients who start at 8:00 AM and want to schedule early calls.

like

Schedule send. Works like a charm

My twin! I am just heating up now

I’m a night owl and love working with others like me - embrace it, this will serve you well as you go up the chain because life is just a day of calls and then doing real work after hours. Find a night owl senior or partner and be their go to.

I have an offer for a company abroad. Originally they wanted me to fly out and start the day after Thanksgiving (not celebrated in their country), but because of the holidays I suggested starting in either December or January with the ability to take some holiday days in December to fly back home for Christmas. They then proposed starting out remotely “as soon as possible” in the US as a contractor and then moving abroad to start full time abroad. (Cont)

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. T-14 and big law have placed me in the company of some really accomplished individuals. It likely skewed the bar in terms of what I find as impressive.

My girlfriend's sister works at a Fortune 500 company and views herself as very accomplished. She's not a good person. I also don't find her impressive so I don't particularly try

How much actual court experience should a junior litigator expect to get in the first year? I've been my firm 6 months as a civil litigator not and have yet to go to a hearing. There have been a few (all relatively minor) but each time the partner tells me it's not important enough for me to attend. As a junior, I feel like I need to learn and no hearing is to minor. How else am I supposed to learn?

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

Mid-level when she's leading the call: please make sure you take notes. It's expected of the person not leading a call (note I always take notes)

Me(jr): asked to lead a call for a different deal as training. Mid-level doesn't take notes (also on call) and tells me it's the job if the junior to take notes.

What do you hate about BigLaw?
I actually love it. I was a paralegal in BL during law school. Maybe I am use to the environment? What am I missing? Help me remove the rose colored glasses. The cases are interesting, pay is fantastic, offices are beautiful, and the research resources are a big reason why I never want to leave. Sure there are partners/senior associates that don’t respect you or your time. That happens everywhere and would mean you need to move firms or sections. What am I missing?
