I’m a mid-level associate who was told I need to improve communication — mainly giving more frequent updates and being clearer about my availability and deadlines.

What are the most effective ways you’ve found to stay communicative without overloading people with unnecessary updates?

Some people have a 24 hr rule where you acknowledge receipt as soon as something comes in and give a timeline for your returning a response (or return the actual work product) within 24 hrs. I'm not sure what it means to share availability here except if someone is asking to connect then you respond with "I can be available xyz" instead of "sure, feel free to reach out".

I think of it as saving a person a step by anticipating what information they likely need from me to move things along towards scheduling something or having expectations for when to review something. Better than a yes or no that leaves someone guessing at when you'll get back to them.

The general rule of thumb is you're not communicating enough if the partner/senior needs to send you emails asking for updates to understand where you are on a project. Most would prefer if you give enough updates that if they're randomly asked the status of something today, it's easy for them to answer that question.

It's equally important to communicate what you have going on so people know about it. The deadline can't be moved just because things came up for you, but the work can be moved to someone with more bandwidth; if you don't communicate what your bandwidth is though, you're likely not giving people enough time to make that judgment call and making their lives significantly more difficult. So if you know you have 4 things to do already that are higher priority than the new assignment, you need to communicate upfront that you have e those 4 things that have to be done first and can do their assignment after. They can then decide if that works or not given their time constraints. If emergencies come up after you've already said you can take on the work, you need to let the lead know as soon as you find out so that they're aware of what's going on and can restaff if necessary. If you don't know what to prioritize you neednto be reaching out for guidance ASAP. Etc.

I keep a spreadsheet of all the cases I work on with deadlines, and update it every 1-2 weeks. Maybe something like that?
