I’m a mid level leader. My next step is Director, I’ve been working toward it for many years here. My new boss is a woman (I initially thought great, 3 of my last 4 were and it’s been great esp in our industry. Hard to find). Recently I was told I wasn’t mature enough in her eyes as I’ve not had a child. I’m mid 30s and don’t plan on having any kids. How do I navigate a boss that thinks I’m at a disadvantage. I’m truly at a loss, until now I’ve been taken care of and moved up well.

This sounds illegal AF without being illegal

I think you need to bide your time as you look externally for a higher level role

In fact, the longer you stay somewhere the less likely you are to be promoted. People get promoted by leaving.

Yeah it’s a strange one… there are obviously personal reasons in there. I couldn’t come up with anything else to say other than I viewed my dedication and willingness to learn as a strength along side my availability that not all parents can provide. With that said, I don’t want to have to sacrifice some semblance of balance simply because I don’t have children.

Did she tell you you’re not mature enough because you don’t have children if so that it’s completely illegal. I once had a boss tell me he wouldn’t move me up in a higher position because he was afraid my husband wouldn’t like all the overtime I had to do.

What did you do about that?

Unfortunately, there are no laws explicitly addressing discrimination against people who don’t have children

Just like there aren’t any laws against discriminating against people who are too young

It’s already an uphill battle to address things that are explicitly illegal so imagine the battle you’d have addressing something like this

I think your gut may be telling you that it’s time to move on from this team or this organization

You can try having a direct conversation about it with your manager, her manager, or HR but if you go that route, you’d have to be prepared for the fact that they will likely try to exit you from the organization

She can’t tell you that and why does she know you don’t have children. Leave that company. If you report it you’d hurt yourself in the process.

Saying that to an employee is wild.
