I'm a midlevel associate. Talent acquisition/lateral recruiting from another firm directly reached out to me asking if I would be interested in their firm. I've never seen or heard of firms directly reaching out to associates for recruiting. Does this mean anything?

Firms are aggressively adding talent management/recruiting positions to be embedded in specific groups. They would be expected to know more than a random recruiter about the group’s specific needs. At the same time, I don’t think it’s like you’re practically hired already or anything

Happens a lot. Just treat it as a lead

Yes, I know two people who lateraled like this. Be careful though, this usually (2/2 instances I know) means the firm is cheap and usually a downgrade from where you are. Good luck!

True, I’m sure it isn’t true in every instance. I just have a sample of 2 instances

Me(jr): asked to lead a call for a different deal as training. Mid-level doesn't take notes (also on call) and tells me it's the job if the junior to take notes.

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
