Anyone else super unimpressed with administrative support with a new firm after lateraling? I told a partner I’d just take care of a routine task myself. He told me my rate is too high and to use a “project manager” (basically an intern they can pay less than a paralegal). We have a 40 person group and 3 project managers making starvation wages. Big firm. You’d know the name.

Yes. Our word processing department is awful. I really can't ask them to do anything. And I've done more Word training so I won't have to.

like

Yes. At my old firm it was called Document Production.

Obviously the partner just doesn't realize how quickly you can complete the task. Older partners really think document processing is so hard to do and takes forever. Also, the only good admins I've found are older and were trained by top firms. Hiring a competent admin is a nightmare, and I work in a major market! This topic drives me crazy because I am word and excel certified. None of these admins even know what I am talking about. And our supposed word processing department screws EVERTHING up. It's so much easier to do it myself.

Through Microsoft way before I went to law school. There are different levels and exams for each program, and passing the highest level exam for a program demonstrates that you are qualified to be an instructor.

like

Yeah, so they will tell you that but if you can’t punch your way out of a paper bag when support isn’t available you’re useless.

like

This is my frustration. I just lateraled and noone taught me how to use their redline software because I'm supposed to be sending it to the practice assistants.

Of course my first week there a partner asks me for a redline at like 7 and I can't figure out how to do it 😑

like

Could you name the firm in a list of a few peers if you’re worried about anonymity?

That sounds really bad if that’s all the staff support you have. Do you have paras in addition to these project managers?

like

Im nit sure I follow your gripe: a partner is asking you to use a rate-appropriate resource and you're mad? Is the PM bad?

like

They’re not actually available. They’re stretched too thin. There’s a 2 day turnaround for a task that would take me 15 min to handle myself.

Dear Fishes,
I have 7 years of experience and recently i got offer from CTS as a Sr. Associate. I am into testing and into automation since last 3 years. I don't have automation architect type knowledge but I do automating scenarios with selenium and Java. I am not into framework development. Now if I join CTS at 15.7 package will they expect me to work into framework development or just as a tester who does automation sprint wise scenarios. Please only genuine suggestion. I am into dilemma.

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Very Noob question: First year here that has done DD for a couple of deals representing the seller now. Essentially all I did was note whether certain agreements have change of control provisions, and if so, what the specific language is. I understand what the CoC do, but why am I doing this? Specifically, what does the buyer do with this? It seems like these provisions should trigger but nothing then happens...
