I’m an associate trying to exit biglaw and there is a current job posting for in-house counsel at one of the firm’s smaller clients. I’m tempted to apply, but scared it’s going to get back to the client’s shareholder contact that I’m looking. Anyone with any insight on this? In a similar vein, has anyone been honest about looking for exiting opportunities with shareholders such that they maybe can help place you somewhere strategic for them and the pipeline of work in the future?

Tell the client, in writing, that your application is confidential and that your firm doesn’t know you’ve applied. The client should maintain confidentiality. Call your client contact before applying in any event so they know to be on the lookout for your application. I don’t recommend telling partners that you want to leave to go in-house — it will mark you as a short-timer and could hurt your position in the firm.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
