Unfortunately, your boss is right. You can be the best, most productive, and most reliable person on your team, but if leadership isn't seeing it, it is like it didn't happen.
One idea I have heard is to put together a script or presentation of everything you have accomplished. Go into that meeting able to spell out exactly what you've done. It also sounds like your boss might be willing to assist you in putting together that list/script. Talk to them to get their thoughts.
I’ll try. And I think I understand it. But, some level of trust should be given since the VP is new and doesn’t know me - right? I just hoped it’d be that way. It’s just so different, but I’ll have to change m my perspective on it. Thanks
Just a point of clarification: having anxiety around social interactions does not mean you’re an introvert - it means you have anxiety.
Introversion just means that social situations drain your emotional batteries, instead of recharging them.
If anxiety around social interactions prevent you from functioning to the best of your abilities, you may benefit from therapy.
Yes, but it also drains me. And I want to crawl into hiding. Lol.
It sound like you do a great job as an analyst in regards to the work you complete but there is an opportunity to improve your communications. I know it sounds old fashioned, but I would suggest reading the Dale Carnegie book on How to Win Friends and Influence People. If you can get more comfortable speaking around people, it will not only increase your visibility to the VP but also make you more valuable as an analyst. You just need a couple techniques to increase your self confidence and you will do great. Documenting and keeping a list of your accomplishments is always a good idea and may make you more comfortable with quick answers when you know you have the information readily available. Good luck!
I appreciate the advice and suggested book. You’re right. I can do the work head down, but need to work on the relationship portion. I guess that’s important to the VP. I’ll look into your resource. It feels like a bad game. Haha - but I guess we all have to put some effort that’s uncomfortable.
You come with proof of what you've did above and beyond what your peers are doing. You show your value in dollars and cents and you also need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Can't depend on your boss being your advocate all the time. At some point you'll have a new boss and they might not be as nice.
That’s so true. My boss has been my advocate for over 7 years. And keeps talking about their retirement. I’m anxious about what happens after.
