I'm at a firm doing employment law (7 years experience) and moving in house to a more generalist senior counsel role. Would it be hard later on to move to an in house employment counsel role if I decide I no longer want to be a generalist?

As long as you don’t stay a generalist for too long, I would think it may benefit you. As a generalist, you will get to learn how the business operates - which can be valuable knowledge to have, even if you go back to a specialty role.

Keep touching it even as a generalist. Then it won’t be an old skill and you can leverage it.

idk why i worded it like that (lawyer brain rot). I just mean keep working in that area in some way!

Senior counsel, retail furniture company. Going through interviews now for the role and I’m wondering what a typical compensation package is. Over the past year, my counsel is constantly judged by a select few senior business folks (eg arguing over FTC compliance, IP risk counsel, and even simple things regarding NDAs that any attorney wouldn’t question. It’s very frustrating that my own team is the one I have to defend my logic to (and not opposing counsel). It feels like they want a rubber stamper, which is not me.I never faced this at my prior in-house roles (probably because they were much a larger). Any advice on how to handle?

Currently working in-house for a large bio pharma - like the company and most of the people, but the work is really getting monotonous and I just leaned through the grapevine that I am making significantly less money ($15k to $30k) than others in the same level/grade as me. The work I do is equally difficult and I have a smaller team because people have left, so there is no way “type” of law justifies this. I think I just did a poor job negotiating my salary and raise. Any tips on what I can do?

Starting a new position in a few weeks and have an opportunity to speak with my future boss before starting. Is there anything I should ask before starting that wouldn’t already have been covered in the interview? I was thinking about asking if I should read up on anything before starting, but I also don’t want to impose obligations on myself if I don’t have to. Fwiw going from firm to in-house. TIA!
