Be prepared to walk once you show your hand… 😭
Got it. So, either chase the money or just stay.
Omnicom is the Matrix. Make some noise - you get unplugged. Good luck to you. Hope you can dodge the bullets like Keanu.
What you want makes ZERO difference. 🤣
If your offer is at a non-holding company agency I’d say get out while you can.
If not, be prepared to walk if they don’t match and even if they do they might still lay you off at the next round since you were willing to walk.
I "heard" Publicis was the better of the holding co's, but then after speaking to someone who recently moved from Omnicom to Publicis, they confirmed it's the same pig different shade of lipstick. Each has their own problems.
This will sound overly cynical but it’s based on decades of experience: you’re the one who thinks you’re a high performer to the point that they will pay you to retain you when you throw an offer in their faces. There is an epidemic of unemployment right now. And anyone is replaceable with someone with twice your experience at half the salary. Dig in. Work hard. Stay employed.
It's risky. You need to be prepared that they'll let you go even if you want to stay. I'd make a case for your salary bump based on competitive comp and what value you bring with your current role to test the water first.
You spins yer wheel and you takes yer chances…
Get your money.
get out while there’s an offer
Just to be clear, this was the same advice given even when it was an employees market. Worst thing they can say is no and keep an eye on how good you are to see if the next round of lay offs they want to keep you. If you are good enough to get an offer elsewhere you may be good enough to keep and not get a raise.
I think being risk adverse is fine. But you also need to know your worth and think logically. From a company that is looking to cut costs wherever what they most likely will do is say “no counter on our end. If you want to go, go. If you like it here, stay.” In hopes that you’ll go and won’t have to deal with laying you off and all that comes with it. If you stay they may see you as a flight risk, so you better hope you are so good that it costs more to replace you than fire you.
If you think you aren’t that good then you aren’t in a position to ask for a counter.
You can always present their offer and hope they’ll counter but you need to be willing to walk away if they say no. Weird if sometime then is like oh jk I’ll stay!
Senior CWs are a sought after level, believe it or not, so you actually have a lot of leverage. It really depends on how badly they want to keep you. They may just promote you to keep you. My other question is where would you be going? Out of network or to some small start up? Will where you would be going a better or worse scenario than your current spot? All agencies are not the same.
So should I just stay and turn down the offer vs rolling the dice to use it as a bargaining chip?
Not necessarily. If you want to take the offer, take the offer. If you are only using the offer for a counter offer, that could fail. Just make sure you really have the new gig and are willing to take it.
Rising Star
You can always leverage a job offer. Leverage is leverage.
You want to stay at the Omnicom Death Star, then stay. You have no leverage. No one does.
