Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks

Managing different personalities and individuals… each person “needs” something different. Trying to identify early what those needs are so that you can try to accommodate each person’s growth because if they feel like their needs are not met by you, they see you as not being a good manager. Some people might need more technical training, some might want more career growth opportunities, some may simply prefer to be left alone, some want you to listen, some will come to you for everything, etc. If you approach them all exactly the same, some will see you failing them. Asking “what do you need to be successful”, “how do you prefer to operate/work”, “what do you like in a manager”, might give you some insight. Two other main challenges: dealing with the whole hiring process (working with HR, reviewing resumes, doing interviews, repeat, repeat, repeat), and performance reviews for your entire team. Good luck
For me the hardest thing was recalibrating how I determined the value I was adding for the company to align with the change in responsibilities. All of a sudden it’s not the number of stories I completed in a sprint, it’s how many stories my team is able to complete, and what I did to help them sustain or increase their velocity without burning out. I had to really internalize that my success was measured by the success of those on my team, that attending meetings so that they didn’t have to was valuable, that addressing team conflicts to keep things moving smoothly was more important than putting my signature on a code review…
And then when I moved into more of a strategy focused role, I had to shift my metrics again, because I have a smaller team now but much larger scope of influence. So now it’s measured by increasing our wins of new work, by enabling whole project teams, by opportunities I bring to the organization through partnerships with other companies, etc.
Be supportive! Check in and ask if they’re facing any challenges. I used to do casual weekly catch-ups over coffee or beer. Lead by example, and they’ll follow. Show empathy over dominance, and your consistent excellence will inspire them. Best of luck with your new challenge. Keep spreading kindness!
