I’m exploring chasing a part time doctorate just to say I have one. I’m a US citizen and US based. I have a bachelors from a T10 university and never got a masters/MBA. I have a global practice so I’m frequently in EU, India, and Eastern Asia. I really don’t care where the doctorate is from, only that it is somewhat accredited (no metaphysics or astrological schools for example). Anybody have any recommendations or insights to this process?

I don’t think there is any reason to get a doctorate for commercial reasons. If you are interested in the topic then it’s worth considering for personal reason but it will have negative ROI if you are trying to do it commercially. You would be better off learning how to code agents or many other topics vs getting a doctorate.

You’re correct that this isn’t for any commercial purpose. I’m not looking for any ROI. It’s simply to satisfy some personal desire. I already know how to code agents and have multiple patents pending related to AI agents and agentic structuring/networking. I have zero desire to do a “technical” or engineering related doctorate. My undergrad was in liberal arts.

Higher Ed degrees are personal trophies. I'm glad I got mine. For the doctorate you'll need to contribute new findings to the world's current knowledge on a topic. It had better align to a passion or you'll never finish. The quickest contributions tend to be research studies that you setup, run, observe, and report on. Ideally it'll be published too. As said, I believe they have a negative ROI commercially, but my personal satisfaction with accomplishing a life long goal was very positive. Best of luck to you, no matter what you choose.

“Just to say I have one”. Hilarious!

Looks like you are trying to check some kind of family expectations box!

In any case a remote PhD program sound more suitable for you given your schedule and work style. Many universities offer a primarily online PhD program - with some occasional in person visits.

Not family expectations but just a personal one. I’m trying to convince my spouse to finish their Ed.D but I’m definitely not competing with them by any means.

Have you considered DBA as well?

I have considered a DBA but I’d like to do some adjunct lecturing when I’m done with this job. (Definitely not in it for the money!) I’ve seen PhD (even from obscure Univ) get the nod much easier than any DBA program.

I have a top MBA and teach adjunct, and it’s worth noting you don’t need a PhD to teach adjunct. So consider an MBA if teaching is your goal.

Despite this, and wanting to scratch an itch, I looked hard into pursuing a doctorate and eventually spent two years in a part time / distance PhD program focused on research only. I found that as my partner job got busier and busier, I couldn’t focus my head on the research and eventually just gave up. So I tried what you are thinking about and it is doable, but know that you’ll have to carve out targeted large blocks of time to focus on this that you might not have.

I am assuming you are interested in a business degree. I suggest you look at dissertation based degrees at universities that are based outside of the US and whose business school is AACSB accredited. You might need to contact professors directly to see if they would sponsor your research topic. Which is to say, think of a research topic first, then contact them based on their profile.
