I absolutely think it’s important for you to talk to your psychiatrist openly about what you’re experiencing and asking whether there may be a different route to get you there (spoken as someone who has taken Ativan and Xanax for debilitating anxiety). And not that you asked for others’ stories - but for me, the final straw that drove me to leave my consulting job (without something else lined up) was my psychiatrist prescribing me Xanax (.25mg) to take daily - for me, that was a sign that something about my lifestyle needed to change. That’s not necessarily the answer for you, but it’s probably useful to ask yourself, is there something else going on.

OP you seem to have a pretty good handle on this class of medications and therapy and it’s inefficacy, etc. . Not sure anyone here can advise better or differently based on your responses to several folks’ comments on this thread.
I’m sorry I don’t have any advice, but I have that same thought all the time with my ADD medication, whether my psychiatrist will think I’m abusing it when I request a higher dose... so you are definitely not alone in that anxiety. On that note, don’t be afraid to ask for what you need - your doctor should be able to discuss the pros, cons, and alternate treatment types
Thank you!
Regardless of what your psychiatrist says, this is a very high dosage and you should work on tapering off of it.
Source: I’ve had terrible experiences with overdosing on Xanax.
They make me very suicidal.
By no means am I a Dr, but I’ve read bad things about Xanax/benzo long term usage and dependency / withdrawal. Be careful OP!
Don’t take Xanax daily, you’re really screwing yourself. I have a background in clinical psych but you can play Dr. Google and look at what it’s doing to your brain on a long term basis.
It’s not pretty.
OP, please go on a long-term medication regimen and possibly switch docs. Something that works on your GABA like xanny
You posted a question about anxiety medication in a depression and anxiety forum. You're saying the comments from people who have had terrible experience with a drug proven to cause long term damage are unnecessary and condescending. This is the exact purpose of having a depression and anxiety forum. If we were telling you something like your erections would stop after taking the Viagra long term that you were asking about in a men's health forum, you'd be acting differently.
Also, your question is worded exactly how an addict would ask it, and you're reacting to personal experiences exactly how an addict would.
OP - we’re only trying to help you here, rest assured.
I can promise you, 0.5 mg itself is a very high dosage of Xanax. Not sure why the psychiatrist has prescribed this for you. 0.25 mg is the standard recommended dosage.
I suggest consulting with another psychiatrist and reducing the intake of Xanax. Long-term regular intake is asking for trouble.
.25mg is the lowest possible dose. How is .5mg high? I’m not being argumentative. I’m trying to understand your source of info.
I thought .5 was half a Xanax? Lucky you that someone will even prescribe. I just live with the debilitating anxiety and throwing up every morning. I’d be scared of spooking your psychiatrist.
Agree with C2
Can anyone tell me how to delete this? Thanks
Express your reasons for wanting to up your dosage to your doctor. That doesn’t imply you’re abusing it, but make sure you’re being honest to your doctor and yourself for why you think the dosage should increase. Each person response to medication differently, so just make sure you working with your doctor to understand how it’s affecting you
