I’m in my conflict avoidance era at work. I work with my team on whatever tasks are handed down to us from the powers above. No real pushback if things change on us. Partner teams who bring up things, we deal with them too. Knowing what the imperfections of the org are but strategically avoiding them. If you aren’t in this chapter, get yourself on it, it’s pretty peaceful!

There's a lot to be said for navigating through the chaos like that. You have found the eye of the hurricane, that elusive spot of conflict avoidance. I've tried to position myself in that realm at times. I find it may take considerable patience, but it can also mean less wear on my nerves.

Hope you find your way there too! Although eye of the hurricane sounds intense.. it feels a lot more chill than that

I like it. Keeping the peace is always a smart move. I roll my eyes at a lot of the work I'm assigned, but I do it anyway because I'm not getting paid for my opinion on the big picture stuff and that's just fine with me.

Rolling eyes in solidarity right beside you software engineer 1!

confession:i regret not prioritizing finding a good partner when i was in my college/early career years and envy those who did. it's harder now mid-senior career because you have less time and it actually requires you put time and effort into finding a good relationship

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

By flexible I mean in terms of moving between positions, companies and technologies.

I've done both and am currently doing salesforce development but don't want to get pigeonholed.

I am trying to figure out how to switch to SWE. I have a masters in civil engineering and have a good background in higher level math. It looks like the better coding boot camps are quite expensive. The alternative is another masters in CS which is the same cost as many boot camps. Any recommendations on picking between a coding boot camp and getting another masters degree in CS? I’m looking to get into the best position possible after getting an education in CS (get a job quick and good pay).

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.
