I’m interested to see if anyone has ever felt like they needed/wanted to learn a new language for work. I see a lot of tech positions where they want someone who is bilingual in German/French/Portuguese/Dutch etc.

Has anyone taken the leap to learn a new language for work? If so how did you start?

I have plans to learn Spanish. But as a hobby. I am multilingual from my country of origin and those languages are regional in my country. In US Spanish is useful in many practical areas of life outside work. I live in Texas so here it is even more useful.

I’m bilingual too from my country of origin but very similar it’s a useless language when I’m not home in my town lol.

Doesn’t seem worth it imo. If you want to learn a language do it for your satisfaction, not for a job.

The idea is sound enough, if you speak another language that makes you a stronger candidate on paper. That thought seems to be driven by the difficult job landscape but in the year or two it takes to be proficient in another language the landscape will probably be very different. Plus you’ll be less likely to actually stick with it unless you enjoy it.

As someone who's B2-C1 Spanish from learning as an adult, you're gonna need more motivation than work to make it happen. You need to practice constantly, which is difficult both motivation wise and finding people patient enough to help you practice

Yeah you can get to like intermediate with Duolingo and Netflix, but getting to the point where you can talk with natives is very hard. I haven't done classes aside from learning the grammar in highschool. Got past the intermediate plateau by backpacking latin america and a few flings with latinas

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.

This would be in the DC metro area. Does $120K seem reasonable or am I dreaming?

NDAs - signed my first one as a part of a severance agreement. thinking about leaving an honest review for this company, but unsure about the liabilities that come with this. (NDA mentioned no defamation) leaning on the side of letting it go, but this employer sucked BAD and i want others to know. ik its hard to give a straight answer bc it depends on the agreement, but wheres the line between bad mouthing vs your honest experience?
