Any American SUV (Tahoe, suburban, Yukon, aviator). They’re couches on wheels.
They also have plenty of room to haul the family on road trips (500+ miles). Gas mileage is lousy though
+1 for Tahoe. I never understood until I tried. You just feel like a baller in them
Poster. Narrow down to either suv EV or sedan
We fly and rent cars for road trips in the south and west a couple times a year. Yukon xl / wagoneer / ex-max great but yeah the mileage is terrible Minivan is awesome for a long ride. Not cool but you just gotta own it. And the Toyota gets like 35 mpg we rent them if we have the whole family. Just me and wife we will usually get a large sedan like an Avalon or maxima. Once we got a sweet upgrade to a 750 :)
I’ve enjoyed my new AMG E53 a great deal - had it for about 4 months now. I find, for me, the driving position is ideal and the seat comfort lasts for several hours at a stretch. Plus, lots of power and electric option for in-city driving.
I hear that Range Rovers have the most comfortable driver’s seat - not sure if that’s just myth or if any truth to that. I’ve never owned or driven one…
Incredibly comfortable, yes
Minivan?
So far the best seats I’ve had are from Porsche, BMW and Volvo, with Volvo being the bargain/value choice of the three 🫣
Years ago I have had great experience road tripping with a Golf R and I really liked the seats back then, but it’s been a while since I’ve been in any VW vehicle.
Volvo seats are incredible. Sedans, wagons, and SUVs of all sizes to choose from.
Go for a plug-in hybrid SUV. Decent gas mileage and will be more comfortable on long drive since you sit higher (than sedan or sport car).
I love love the BMW X5 50e or 45e. They are very comfortable. Sit high. Great tech and visibility. 30-50 mile ev range is perfect for my commute and with gas, can drive long distance. Also has good Adaptive cruise control on the highway. Better than my Tesla. Best value is a used 45e that has DAPP, and fully loaded preferably
Great question — I totally get where you’re coming from. A 10-minute test drive around the block doesn’t tell you anything about how supportive the seats feel after 3–4 hours on the highway. Some of the consistently comfortable cars I’ve seen people swear by for long trips are full-size sedans (Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES, Chrysler 300), midsize SUVs (Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander), and crossovers with softer suspensions (Subaru Outback, Hyundai Santa Fe).
One tip: check if the seat has adjustable lumbar support and a tilt function for the bottom cushion — those two features make a huge difference on 300+ mile drives.
By the way, if you’re also thinking about selling or trading in your current car, that’s exactly what we do at webuycarscalifornia.com
. We make the process super simple — instant cash offers, free towing, and no smog hassles. That way, you can put your energy into test-driving your next road trip car instead of stressing about how to sell the old one.
