Rising Star
Start from the other end: what do you care about in a car? What do you not care about (I’m going to assume performance, since you said Evoque)? What are you able to comfortably spend?
When you say “SUV” do you mean truck with some off road chops or do you mean an SUV-shaped car?
Spend some time thinking about those questions and it’ll pretty naturally narrow you down to a couple-three options.
Mazda products like CX-90, CX-50 and CX-5 are good starting points as they border mainstream and premium. Then if you need something more mainstream you can go Toyota, Honda or Kia. If you want more exclusivity go German, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, Fiat or other European at the cost of reliability. If you want both, then Acura, Lexus or Genesis.
If reliability is what you are looking for go Lexus/Toyota, both make more than one compact SUV.
A friend of mine just got a Volvo XC90 and it's really nice. It's nice to drive, it is comfortable on long trips, it feels really big from a comfort standpoint but easy to drive. Plus, it's safe!
I Love my Porsche Cayenne S and plan to replace it with another when it's ready.
I also have a BMW X3 and it's small, easy to zip around in, but not comfortable and not enjoyable for anything but quick errands. The BMW drives like a go-kart. Its controls are funky compared to the Porsche. I would not buy another. I also don't care for the X5, but a lot of people love them.
I would suggest you go drive multiple vehicles and see what you like. That's all that matters.
BMW X3, X5…get M if that’s in your budget (not the M performance)
Lexus NX, RX
Kia Telluride
Given Evoque's size class, the Lexus RX 350 is the best in class. No need to have your hood up every weekend
