There’s no one answer to this. It’s a very subjective question. Every politician is different and in it for different reasons. I’m not sure you can paint the polity of an entire country with one brush.
On a macro level though, Federal system is differently rigged. Liberals under Trudeau are more interested in image politics than actual work for the public. At a time when the country is going through one of the worst inflations, housing crisis, amongst other things, Canada is spending billions on a war in a different continent and the PM is flying to Ukraine for a photo op offering free this, free that.

I guess you don’t consider state sanctioned genocide worse than organ harvesting. Not sure what you’re implying here. What’s your experience with Native Americans? What’s your race? What’s your background with China?

For the amount of work and stress that it is, being an MP or MPP isn't really that rewarding. I definitely think there is an element of "wanting to make the world better" that motivates politicians.
SM1, probably just for the spite shots against Toronto and to keep funnelling public money into his buddies businesses and his family’s, like the new Ontario signs he contracted to his family business.

My cynical take is that Ithink they go into with a very positive attitude of trying to impact change and make things better , but quickly realize that in order to be effective at their jobs, they have to navigate politics, etc. which ends up with the shitty results we inevitably get as a society.
It’s no different in consulting. People who come in (esp. new grads, new team managers, etc.) come in with a very open perspective of wanting to be really good at fixing client problems, being an amazing manager etc. but then they quickly realize what they need to do to get ahead.
