Burlingame, San Bruno, San Mateo, Belmont, etc closer to I-280 side. Definitely within an hour of drive and you can also take BART too
"on the off chance I can buy" being the operative phrase here tho
Check out northern Marin towns - San Rafael and Novato both great
You can get to SF downtown from large parts of North Bay, Peninsula, and East Bay. But it depends on if you drive, BART, ferry, etc.
In general, it will get cheaper the further away from the city you get, with some exceptions for places like Oakland hills and Silicon Valley. you will find green and hiking within 20-30 minutes of almost anywhere.
Try looking at some places and mapping to the city during commute hours of 7-10 and 4-7.
this can be a pain of a commute (even if ur fortunate enough to take 280) if ur going 3+ days a week. commuting from San Mateo on 280 was pretty wearing for me. can always take Caltrain too, but I liked having my own car to commute in
Dublin. 40 mins bart to the city
Marin is not affordable. East Bay is a good option. Bart runs deep, as mentioned you can live as far as Dublin and have ~1 hour commute. Walnut Creek is ~30 minutes, Oakland less than that by bart.
