This has been happening to me and I’ve recently realized it’s one partner telling others he’s filling my plate (he’s not) so I’m leaving. Can’t allow one guy to determine whether I get a raise. I’d recommend looking for jobs.
A8 had the same problem. When we were busy the partners in my group got mad whenever I’d be doing business development on my own time and said I don’t need to be originating clients. As things slowed down and I started getting work from other related groups they got jealous and all but told me not to work for the partners in the other groups.
The head of my group asked me what I was even doing working outside of our group (despite all of us, including partners, not having had work in months). In my case, I didn’t listen because I decided having hours was better than risking getting laid off, and it seems I was right. However, I could have very well been pushed out for not listening, so it was a calculated risk.
Now that things are slower and we’ve done layoffs, if they hear I’ve originated something they’re foaming at the mouths to encourage it and are actively encouraging me to keep getting work from other groups.
Yes, and if you aren’t getting pushed out, soon your utilization will get you fired instead.
Yes
If you have been there for more than a year and you are the only one not getting work, then, yes, you are likely being pushed out.
I just started my job and this also is happening to me
If you just started, they can't be pushing 🫸 🫷 you out already. It's negligence and mismanagement.
I would fight for my job by setting up an appointment with the managing partner and/or HR.
Never jump to conclusions. 🦘
Get the facts
While you are conducting your job search 🔍🔎🔍, I would take on a pro bono case or help the legal aide society in your city.
January is a time when a lot of firms will be hiring.
Screw 🪛 this firm and enjoy the holiday season!
I would love to be in this position
You really, really would not. They turn on you quickly, then when you get let go you’ll have to explain your underutilization in interviews. Even if it’s a firm or practice group issue, it will appear as a personal performance issue.
Mentor
You need to start applying today. The firm will likely start to push harder if you don't take the hint soon.

I see posts like this on here a lot. If your group is busy and you are not, I think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself am I the problem? Am I doing the best work that I can? Am I meeting the needs of my team and the clients? I’ve never seen a good associate get iced out.
Either way, you should start looking for a new job. At worst, you’re going to get fired soon, and at best, you’re losing valuable time to develop as an attorney and falling behind your peers. If the answers to the questions above are that you could be doing better, make sure you do when you get to your new firm.

Yes.
