I’m seriously considering quitting the corporate world entirely and just starting my own fractional CFO shop for small businesses. I’m tired of making partners rich while I grind away on spreadsheets that nobody actually looks at. I have a few leads, but the thought of having to do my own marketing and sales is terrifying. Is it better to build the side-hustle while working full-time, or do you just have to burn the boats and go all-in to make it work?

“Making partners rich while grinding away on spreadsheets nobody looks at” - so relatable

Going off on my own has been the best choice I ever made. I did it as a side hustle until I was at 50% of my salary at that time, and then quit to go all-in. I would suggest that approach, especially in this economy. You don't want to find yourself unemployed.

How did you get clients and grow the business?

Striking out on your own is really, really expensive. I knew that when I started but it was even harder than I ever anticipated. I would definitely start with the side hustle and build up a decent base of clients before losing your income and your healthcare.

I've a question on what sections to put on a regular resume. I see some people are using consulting style resume for outside companies as well. UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)

Should you discuss salary range with an internal company recruiter prior to setting up an interview? With external recruiters it’s pretty easy to talk about the expected range. I am trying to avoid wasting all of our time if i get to the last interview and they are expecting a salary that is too low for me.
