Same. I’m single. No kids, either. But, I help my family out a lot. I often wonder what I would do if I had a financial safety net, or didn’t need to worry about what my family would do without my income. But, alas, rent is due the first of every month and I’ve got bills to pay. So onward, I guess…
For some yes. For some no.

Leave New York.
You lose the city tax leaving nyc which is worth it
Only 30 more years.
Gotta parlay that big city gig name recognition into a mid city gig and start amassing equity. That or buy something fun upstate for the weekends.
Move to a mid-sized city. Or a state with no state income tax.
SM, I don’t know your situation with your family but I hope it gets better!
I’m at 25 years working in advertising. It’s a grind for sure.
Hate to tell you, but any job making $180k+ is going to be a grind. That’s just life nowadays.
Move to Jersey like the rest of us
NYC is the grindiest of all, try to get out if you can and go to a more laid back city
So to everyone saying to move to a smaller city, I’m curious what you do if/when you get cut at the only shop in town. Yes, NYC is a grind, but at least you have options.
If you live in a small city and you no longer have a job in advertising, you can get a job in another field in that same city or find something remote. That's what you would do as a human who needs work.
As someone living in a smaller city, it feels like the majority of the jobs posted are in NYC. AND most of the jobs are hybrid, which means you'd need to live in the area. A lot of the remote jobs are gone or are highly competitive in this post-covid landscape. I actually find myself wishing I was in a bigger city for this reason!
Yea… going on 6 years single income over here. Grind grind grind grind grind… when is thriving an option is my questions
Do you have to live in NY? If not, GTFO!
If you can afford your family life solely on your income, aren't you essentially living the conventional "American Dream?" Just trying to give you some positive spin on it.
I did state "conventional" to try to be nice. 🙂
I worked in NYC for a few years and I've got to say that I've never seen people work so hard. I'm from another big city (not in US) which is known for its grind, but really it now seems like a village compared to NY. So you all have my total admiration. Sorry, I don't have any advice!
I feel this. That’s what my husband makes. I’ve considered quitting multiple times but it would be tight without my salary.
Start your own consulting firm.
Move to the burbs (Just not in NJ/PA though, too full)
You’re a blessing. Hope you’ll find rest and peace with it soon.
