I’m studying for my Six Sigma Black Belt right now, and the textbook scenarios are always so clean. The data is available, the stakeholders listen, and the root cause is obvious. In my actual experience in the industry, the "root cause" is usually a mix of politics and budget cuts, not just a statistical outlier. Does anyone else feel like certifications teach you the science but fail to teach you the politics of the job?

I could definitely say that about any textbook or certification course I’ve taken. Real-world situations are never the same. Still, they’ve helped prepare me in some ways. Honestly, I think there’s no substitute for actually getting out there and experiencing it.

The learnings that you achieve in these courses and certifications do dont transform into every scenario in real life, but they help you prepare for life.

The more situations you are exposed to you may feel like it is helpful. Yes budget cuts and tight deadline causes issues but there are actual failures other places as well.

Yes. Certifications teach ideal conditions. Real organisations introduce politics, incentives, and fear. The missing module is usually influence without authority.

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

I am seeking new employment, I was recently laid off due to lack of work. I would very much appreciate any leads. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

Hi Everyone, I am trying to apply for a Technical Support role at Dropbox I’m entering all the required fields but there seems to be an issue, when I hit submit after filling the form, it doesn’t submit and throws error ‘Looks like you left this blank! Please fill out this required field’ when all the fields are entered already (I have checked so many times, and filled the form from scratch several times too). Anyone from Dropbox who can put me in touch with HR or suggest what I should do next?

I am a Mechanical Engineer currently in Structural Analysis domain for 2 years and Want to change my domain to Data Engineering or Big Data Developer. What should be my approach and ideally how long would it take to get into this industry ?
