Last thought, if you are worried it looks bad to go from Director at an agency to say, Manager or Sr. Manager in house. Don’t be. Corporate math almost always says take agency position and subtract 1-2 levels lol. They almost always want more tenure for those titles than the fast paced way agencies promote up to the equivalent title. Annoying but I’ve seen that be pretty true across companies. So reset any expectations that you have to have equal level or above if going to a large brand (startups wouldn’t count there).
Completely agree, and just to add - you usually are still getting at least equivalent in base or higher than the ‘more senior’ agency title when you move in-house agency. And definitely higher considering total comp. So definitely wouldn’t worry about a title change
Yes, easier to move from an in-house agency role to a brand team - at least at my company. As someone mentioned, you’re working closely with brands so you’re networking and could easily get tapped to move over. But regardless, most companies prefer to hire internal vs external so you’ll have a leg up regardless
I’ve seen a VP Strategy Director come over as a Senior Marketing Manager. I think it depends on the company and if years of experience/ total comp makes sense. Definitely not a one to one on title
I previously worked in house agency, now I’m back to actual agency. Where I was the in-house agency was the best way to eventually transition to a traditional brand role at that company if you wanted because you meet stakeholders in those roles on multiple brand teams. Not sure if that applies at smaller brands that don’t have a bunch of brands underneath the in house agency but if it’s a large brand with a house of brands and you want to move into a brand role at that company, it can’t hurt. I personally only really want to go back in house if it’s an in house agency. True brand side was really dull to me and I missed the flexibility of working on the house of brands.
My notes? Not FAANG. But if it’s similar it wouldn’t surprise me. Although mine was t in tech and I always thought tech was the exception to the above. Inflated salaries still but lower titles.
i've done all 3 - agency, brand, in-house agency. it's definitely easier to pivot internally once you have your foot in the door. on the brand side i've practically done it all - integrated/brand marketing, CRM, web strategy, now product marketing. in my experience, it can be easier to move into different types of roles that interest you if you are seen as a rockstar or high-performer. your reputation definitely gets around.
Completely agree with this!
