I’m trying to move firms and it feels like everyone wants someone who already worked at a similar size or type of firm. My experience is solid, just from a different environment. Do firms actually care that much about where you came from?

Yes, because the corporate clients care. I’ve had many recruiters explain that to me, and that is why I’ve been having some trouble lateraling to another firm.

It'll help if its a really hot market for your group and youre willing to eat a year. The reality is big law is way different than midlaw. Midlaw is more accepting of smaller firms. You can climb the later but you have to be strategic and be able to sell yourself well.

Firms do care about where you are from, but don’t do see many lawyers from different backgrounds in big law, so keep applying and sell the key points of your background, you’ll find the one

Few tips to improve your visual design skills

- Learn Typography: Typography is essential because 60-70% of user interfaces are about written content displayed in a meaningful way.

- Learn Layout and Composition: You don’t need to be pixel perfect, but if you place labels 10px above inputs, you must do that consistently across your whole design.

- Learn Color: Color doesn't need to be complex. Understand how colors interact with each other and learn how color can set moods.

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

I am in the final steps of the interview process for an in-house position. I mentioned to the recruiter that I had unvested equity I would be leaving on the table. She said the company would take this into account and make me whole. She later asked for proof of the equity in the form of my account statement and balance, which I provided. I have not yet received an offer. Is it typical for companies to ask for this documentation if they don't intend to make the candidate an offer?
