In-house counsel from big law: do you find in-house life more or less professionally competitive than firm life? I thought by leaving a firm I was escaping the cutthroat environment, but competitiveness does pop up in different ways in house. Curious what others' experiences are.

This has not been my experience and nearly all of our attorneys came from biglaw.

like

I should add that my department has less than 10 attorneys, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I see more competition for advancement (limited spots and opportunities), but not at all in my day-to-day life. F50 company.

Agreed.

No competition; just a lot of misplaced ambition 😂

funnylike

Definitely more competitive. Less promotions and less resources.

like

In my experience, not competitive when I was in a small legal group of 15, but yes competitive when I joined a F50 legal department of 1000.

like

Depends on size of group. If large, likely yes you’re all fighting for the same promotions. In the smaller group of 7 I’m in now, we pretty much know our hierarchy and understand title bumps will happen after you gain the requisite YOE. Salary bumps come with that but you will get annual raises and bonuses.

I’m so burned out and not sure what to do. 29 in Texas. I am currently a Deli Manager. My experience is in banking, real estate, shipping and receiving, caregiving and the obvious retail. Unfortunately I struggle getting a job due to a deferred adjudication on my record for theft. It was dismissed but it still pops up I have 4 more years before I can seal the record. Idk what I could do and still make a living.

Hello. I am new and I wanted to get some advice.

Heads up: I don’t have dm open yet.

I don’t really know what to do as a career or anything anymore. I’ve been trying to find part time work for the time being. I feel like I have 0 skills when I try to look for work. I currently do freelance art. I enjoy it, but I don’t make enough yet. I previously did IT work— but became burnt out and have been out of the field for ~3 years. I am trying to learn programming, but for myself—not job ready.

I almost got out of Pharma... A CD from a Consumer agency doing solid work reached out, and I was so excited thinking I could finally do the kind of work I love. Then they told me they will fill the position with a current employee. I played it cool, but I can’t deny I felt frustrated. I don’t wanna do healthcare, but it seems like it’s the only thing available in NYC nowadays. I also don’t have many connections in this city. So, IF you need an ACD/Art (full-time or FL-to-perm), let’s chat! 🙌🏻

I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?
