I honestly just think it's the market. When I made the switch from agency to in-house 6 years ago, there were plenty of employers willing to hire agency people. Now it feels like the barrier to entry is high, but I'm seeing that across industries. I think it is worth it to try and network more and lean on people you know to help you get connected!
I also came from an agency into an in-house role, and at first, it felt like the team wasn’t very welcoming. What helped me was being patient, earning trust, and showing that I understood the brand’s long-term goals, not just the immediate project. Over time, that balance helped me find my place.
It took me over a year to feel comfortable in an in-house role after over 10 years agency side. Marketing and advertising are more like cousins than they are siblings. I’m lucky that the team I was joining was happy to have me as I “knew what I was doing” from a creative/big thinking/strategic thinking standpoint and knew someone who was previously on the team and the stellar reference. The team already trusted me before I even started. I think part of the reason that roles are hard to come by is that people don’t tend to leave and the scale of work is usually pretty steady so there aren’t often brand new positions opening up.
IME agency people can look down on in-house teams and assume they’re less creative, less driven, less talented, and that they can’t hustle like agency people can. That could be the tension you’re feeling.
From close relation. Agency is all that's hiring him back after 10 years of working in and out with them. He tried in house and nearly collapsed his whole life.
I would say market and area have a lot to do with issue.
