Interviewed at a firm and they’re asking salary expectations so they can make me an offer. HCOL/major market, 11th year associate, would bill out at $500-600 an hour, 1700-2100 hours a year. Commercial lit, some real estate and HOA stuff. I’m licensed in 3 states for whatever that’s worth. What would be a ballpark for a salary base for something like this, what should I ask for?

Based on your post and your reactions to the initial response I think your range is competitive at 225-240. If you’re bringing clients then 250 could be justifiable.

like

You must not be in a HCOL/major market then esp if you’re barely hitting 200k 11 years in

I’m MCOL and same general areas, rates, and hours. $269k base

like

For reference, I’m in similar market billing 1800 at $350-$400/hr and make $225k. Large firm but not big law. Not saying my pay is competitive (I think it’s under but my efforts to change it have gone nowhere) but hope this helps.

like

How big is the firm? My gut says $350k

That sounds about right shoot I would think even higher esp if you’re 11 years in. If it’s a HCOL area even boutique firms will pay you up there if you’re experienced.

$283k is obviously the rule of thirds at 1700 hours and $500/hr but idk if firms are still doing that. I think anything under $250k is low for your vintage.

As lawyers are there ways to get paid for connecting clients?

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.

During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon?
