It’s one of those places where the members think it’s exclusive, but it is not. Once upon a time it was, however maintenance costs on their facilities have forced them to aggressively expand.
If you don’t care about the social aspect and just want nice facilities, then it will be hard to top in New York.
At <30, that’s actually not that bad
I’m sure there are lots of nice people there, but be forewarned that they might not all meet the traditional image of elite club members (it won’t be all bankers, private equity types, idle rich, consultants, lawyers). If your focus is more on networking, think about the University Club (a step up in difficulty/prestige), the Union Club (two steps up), or the Knickerbocker Club (also two steps up). However if you want amazing facilities, then the NYAC can’t be beaten
Thank you
The Union League and the Union are two very different types of places. Both Philly and N.Y. Union Leagues are quite Trumpy
I would have to feel it out first. Also, the AC allows women too, which is a plus. Being all male was nice in prep school, but I think at this point in my life I would want coed.
Why do you think the social aspect is sub par?
How much isnit?
It gets more expensive with age. For a 23 year old I was told it was $3k to join. The yearly maintenance is $1200 a year and goes up incrementally until I am 35. Once you pay the $3k, you never have to pay the joining fee again. I hear once you are in your 30s or older, the joining fee is very expensive.
Associate 1: I know a trash-with-cash type who is a member of the Union League in Philly and a trust fund baby with a part-time DJ-ing gig as his only occupation who is a member in NYC. I have a feeling the standards dropped over the years, if that club is anything like my experience in the NY Junior League a few years ago
Most of these places are like that. Lol. I'm sure there are plenty of rich liberals too.
Not sure about the Philly one, but the N.Y. Union League is a dedicated Republican club
Based on the requirements, I don't think I would be able to get in anyway. 😪 I assume I would a sponsorship. I know a bunch of people who belong to the AC at least.
Imo you don’t want to join the Union League. It is certainly not for me
