Resource managers at KPMG do not, in my experience, represent your best interest as an on the bench(or not) resource. They won't move a needle until your PML or the partner makes them. I continued to get bombarded by low skill IC engagements to stay billable that were neither my interest nor one that would add value to my career progression beyond " xx% utilization". This is despite me networking to source engagements and looking at the job portal in SYNC (or whatever it was called after SYNC was replaced), and along to be put on them
Yeah - standard response. I didn't found much support from my leadership in helping me move out of my team/practice either. They will never say no to you in your face, but they will continue to pull the levers behind the scene to make it as difficult as possible. You have two options - network with a Cyber Partner (no one else below a partner) and get them to make that case for you. Or, find another job elsewhere
There's a huge difference between 'I reached out to my scheduler and got yelled at' and 'I'm trying to ninja switch competencies and got yelled at'. There's a lot more difference between the two - you need a lot of finesse and networking to make a move like this, and it sounds like you haven't obtained approval to do so.
I want to be sympathetic, but there's clearly a game to play here, and you can't just switch competencies as you would a college major. Honestly, I'd reach out to your mentors within the firm and see what they say - they're possibly in a practice with a different culture to these things, or under some sort of misapprehension about your conversations with your pml.
the IA partner reached out earlier to the Cyber partner of my interests
I would also look into changing my PML (if things don’t move in the direction you want)... doesn’t seem like she’s much support here
If it’s coming up I would switch immediately... don’t wait, this is your career it is affecting not your PML’s. I learned from my mistakes, that’s why I’m no longer with KPMG.
since Cyber and IA work hand in hand here, my current IA partner who has transferred 5 different competencies within KPMG in 20 years, connected me with the Cyber partner.
again, my PML got upset with me for reaching out to the IA partner about my Cyber interest. she said I just cant go to the partner and talk about these things. my PML is a director btw, I went to her and she claimed she knew no one in Cyber... then I went to the partner as the next step. she was upset about that.
Yeah, but know this. She isn't the only one, there are alot of such Directors with as much lack of leadership skills as the lack of class. You'll have to watch out for such people. They all want to become partners overnight, and will do whatever it takes to run over someone below them
If it concides with something that was lined up or you haven't provided timely update on you reaching out, might have discomforted few in your current group. Might need more context, and if you explain to them the rationale, should be fine.
there is nothing lined up yet as I am still on my current engagement till mid November
Did you literally email your resource manager (not client saving manager) to ask them to find you a next engagement w a list of your areas of interest?
I literally emailed the person who is in charge of staffing me to engagement which align with my skills lol..
so background... I've been trying to transfer to Cyber since February.. my PML told me "you were hired into IA(internal audit) and that's where you need to be".... so now I am rolling off my current project and I was told by 2 mentors to reach out to my RM to see if I could he staffed on any Cyber projects. I reach out to my PML first because I know how they are in that department.. I ask if I can reach out to RM. she said shed do so herself... and I heard. nothing back because she did not reach out. so I reached out to RM myself. I get a text and an email saying that she needs to talk to me and I should not reach out any more.
Is that you my queen👋🏽
OP, 1. have you considered applying for one of the open Cyber positions and 2. Have you contacted transition assistance?
A1 - yes, it's "confidential". But I've gone through this process during my time at KPMG, and it is a fluke. There is nothing "confidential" in these partnerships. All of these groups will do what is best for their partners and the partnership model. Everyone who isn't a partner, is a mere number no matter what they make you believe
Is this week or next enrollment period for changing PMLs? I heard that is new this year. Maybe you can change pmls
I think its happening this week. Tracy Bernard said there were some technical issues. I will be changing PMLs
