Love the variety, love being around smart people, love the pay. Love the travel when it happens (not like the old days).
Haha love it!
Consulting is definitely a super challenging and sometimes demoralizing industry, especially with the long hours and pressure. For me, I enjoy the variety and the problem-solving aspect, but it does come with its fair share of burnout. It’s a love-hate thing, but when I get a win, it makes it all feel worth it.
Maybe I need to relook at things, what do you consider wins?
Yes, I absolutely love the variety of work and different opportunities to grow as a professional. Sometimes the hours suck, it I feel like I’m being challenged everyday. And that in and of itself is rewarding.
Hmm I’ve lost that appreciation of the work itself over time
I wouldn’t say I’m ecstatic but I do have a good work life balance that allows me for hobbies and sleep
I work in tech consulting so it’s nice to learn new platforms, I can be creative ecp with front end work. Def less abstract than pure strategy and I’ve also been a learner so love learning
I can see that, the less tangible can make you doubt why you do what you do from time to time
I am. The work is challenging, I don’t have to travel much, I am surrounded by great people that share my values, career progression is more merit based than industry, and, provided you are billing, there is more stability than industry.
Fair points. How come you don’t have to travel?
6 years in and I’m so over it
Amen
Is anyone truly happy in any job? Most of it is circumstance and what you want to do with your time. If you rather be with your family/travel/play an instrument / etc. than be in office, every job will suck.
I’ve had jobs in the past where I’ve been happy. Ironically, they didn’t pay as well and I wasn’t doing high impact work, but I enjoyed the people I worked with. Maybe that’s the difference
I already got out and in a startup for 4 years, still not happy. So it’s not consulting, it’s just having to work 70-80 hour weeks. Next stop, big tech. Let’s see if the grass is green on that side.
Good to know it’s not just us consultants who’re miserable. Keep us posted homie
