Is better to:

(a) have low hours and deliver great work product; or

(b) overextend on taking on assignments leading to hitting hours, but blowing deadlines and/or delivering poor work product?

Option A will get you fired or hurt your career progression within the firm. Option B will get you fired and/or ruin your reputation inside and outside the firm.

You must find that balance and be somewhere in the middle, maybe with a focus on delivering great work product so people will come back for more, if you must focus on something.

With option A you MIGHT make counsel if you’re really a legal wizard and the stars align. So there’s that.

Option A sounds way more satisfying. If your skills are rare and valuable enough, it could potentially make up for low hours. But if you are fungible, then probably not.

From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

I’m hoping someone might have some ideas about this- I’m currently five years out of law school with a clerkship, a tax LLM, 3 years of experience doing transactional tax work and a few months of EC/VC experience (which I recently switched to from tax). I like the EC/VC work, but I don’t know how long I want to stay in biglaw. Can anyone weigh in on how employers for in-house roles might look at my experience in a year or two?

Can two different recruiters submit you to the same place if they’re submitting 4-5 months apart? I’m not using both concurrently. Recruiter 1 submitted me to places in the beginning of the year and only one interview came out of it. Recruiter 2 wants to submit me to some places now. I’m wondering if there’s going to be any conflict/look bad etc if there’s an overlap.
