In my opinion I would say no. Big 4 tax professionals are generally good at one thing(federal income tax, state & local, international, etc) but when I worked with teams in the middle market the professionals maybe were a little less deep in each topic but had a much higher baseline knowledge in different areas. Now that I’m in private it’s highly preferable to be intermediate knowledge in multiple areas as opposed to be the absolute expert one thing. Being the expert on one thing is helpful when you are the advisor, but when you’re the tax person at a large company you need to be exposed to a lot of areas. I spent multiple years at big 4, then midsize and then private. Midsize prepared me for private significantly more than Big 4 did.

I can agree with this.
Personally I found working at a great regional firm the best for my growth. My clients were big but not huge so I got to see the whole audit, prepare F/S, assist with writing technical memos, etc., all of which doesn’t/can’t happen at big4. If you don’t go big4 you have to know how to market yourself and spin your experience into a positive. Big4 experience speaks for itself, other experience doesn’t, in general. That doesn’t mean it isn’t as good or better it means you have to be able to spin it.
Having been at few firms, Big 4 does provide the best training.
