Is it a career killer to admit that you have absolutely no desire to ever become a Partner? I want to do my research, draft my motions, bill my 1,600 hours, and go home to my family without ever having to worry about origination credits or firm politics.

Admit to yourself? Or to others?

People generally don’t take kindly to anyone else’s thumbing their nose to the system.

If you're only billing 1,600 hours then I don't think you need to worry about explicitly telling people that you don't want to make partner.

I’m counsel at a big firm on a reduced schedule (80%, so 1600 hours). I’ve made it clear I’m not looking to make partner. I don’t have to worry about originations unless I decide to go for partner. That being said, I am still expected to help out on non-billable BD.

1600 hours but not originating business is a hard sell.

That said, some firms have counsel tracks that are non-partner, but sometimes they pay lower than senior associate salaries while still expecting 1900+ hours.

Yes. That’s a bad idea. What purpose does it serve? What are you accomplishing telling people that?

Tax Senior here. I’m well liked around the office, I put in the hours and work hard, I haven’t had any dumpster fire projects, but I am a mediocre performer compared to my peers (not as strong project management, communication, not as confident). I just got told they’re firing me. Should I expect severance? Have other people been fired for similar? What did you do with your career?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
