Absolutely! That’s the difference between leadership and management. Management is more administrative in nature, while leadership is more about empowering your team and showing them the way.
100% , the job of a leader is to provide purpose, motivation, and direction.
Otherwise, you can just bring in a project manager to keep everyone on task.
Wow, it is really disturbing to see a “Manager Data Science” asking this question 🫣
Please tell me where you work so I can avoid it.
Thanks for the reply but I was actually asking because I felt that my leader was having issues creating a motivating environment for the team
In theory, yes ofc. In practice, it depends heavily on the company culture, especially on whether managers are assessed on the development of their reports. You get more of what you incentivize, less of what you discourage. The in-between belongs to personal taste and the path of least resistance
Yes. As a Manager, I see myself being less of an execution person and moreso somebody who is the buffer between my As/SAs and Partners/Clients. Thus, I see my role as primarily doing what I can to make sure my As/SAs have the resources they need to execute on the day-to-day milestones we have to meet (this includes everything from coaching them through problems/frameworks to pushing back on unreasonable expectations from Clients/Partners) and communicating upward both results and challenges with the project to make sure it's staying on track.
I've encountered a lot of folks who think Management is just passing things down the ladder and "reviewing", but those folks are not usually people that folks like to work with and develop a bad reputation over time.
100% yes.
It’s a leaders job to motivate the gap between misalignment of pay. Pay should be the motivator. But we let people slide on a full salary and thus we can’t pay our worthy people enough! All hail Elon, fire the excess weight. Create the room for value.
It absolutely is.
Absolutely, whether directly or indirectly
To an extent yes
