I’m painfully aware of how close a layoff could be. That being said, very stressful to think about it every day when it’s well out of my control.
No one knows, but you can control how you prepare for that
honestly great advice. i was laid off of my first job in tech bc the startup collapsed but i was so rattled by it. mentally preparing myself a bit more for how i would react and what i would do/say would probably make it less scary
I had a job where I felt that way every Friday. The company was having problems, and I had it in my head that layoffs would occur on a Friday. I dreaded checking my email on Fridays, as I was expecting the doomsday message. When I was eventually laid off, the email was sent to me on a Tuesday afternoon. It was unsigned, from a department, and I at first I wondered if it was real. If you're more or less expecting it, it's possible they'll still surprised you.
I've had that fear lodged in the back of my mind for like a year now. I don't get how anyone wouldn't worry about it. If you don't own the company or have a personal connection to the person who does, there's always a chance you're going to get invited to that meeting with HR.
I personally don’t feel that way, our leadership is so transparent and I work for a really small company. That being said, I’m sorry you feel that way and maybe try and ask your leader for more clarity on things to make yourself feel better
