Many other countries around the world create fake ads for the event. They never fail to turn up in Cannes. It is what they care most about all year. We have representatives from Brazil, India, Argentina, China, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand….. they don’t always win anything but you’ll see them there.

One of the most prominent people from my company, on stage, is a black man. Another is an Indian man. Sure, they’re flanked by plenty of white people or white-passing people but they are of the top 5 most important people there.
That tracks.
Don’t worry, they’re not noticing anyone else but themselves.
I’m a black guy, I’m here and am seeing a lot of people of colour. That said advertising didn’t get any less white in the last week.

All the POC agency leaders have been laid off, save for 1 or 2 tokens per holdco. Carat and Havas have zero. Publicis has only 1 that did panels. WPP has zero now, too after their purging. Pretty much all of the “Independent” agencies have ZERO POCs, most never hire them. DEI isn’t hot anymore and most are cowards so no one is giving POCs spots on panels when they don’t have to because no one is smarter or more innovative than white men (especially if they’re bald).
this is a worldwide advertising event. You might see “white people” but they’re from all countries.
Isn’t the answer obvious? Leadership in our industry is overwhelmingly white and Caucasian. This is not new, the global companies even while “global” are mostly led by western, white men and women.
Wish I could. Our office just pat itself on the back for being the most diverse in the network, and then the holding co sent a whole bunch of white people to Cannes.
Lots of POC aren’t travelling this year, not sure if the country will let us back in…

Brazilians and Argentinians dominate award shows but a lot of them look white.

What if I told you if you put as much effort into your work as you do worrying about other people’s skin color you may find yourself invited to more award shows?

My sense is that the demographic shifts taking place in the country along with the corresponding shifts in purchasing power will finally force the agencies to stop hiring and promoting guys men who might as well be members of The Chainsmokers. You know the type. Stratigically unshaved. Five black t shirts.
My fear is that the industry will have reached rump status by then; a few huge holding companies and maybe 20 junior shops.
