Rising Star
Not once, but twice.
Engineering to Management
Management to Law
Absolutely love what I am doing now (able to leverage all three and sets me apart)
Rising Star
Feeds each of different aspects of my mind. I have a very geeky side, a very human interaction side, and a power and leverage side (other aspects apply - but those are meant to indicate the different areas).
When I switched to management, I loved the people and leverage aspects, but man, I felt my mind drifting away without technical challenges. Now, I am challenged with each new assignment, coming up to speed with top level innovation, and I deal with clients that understand that these are business assets being pursued. Plus, patent law may be an area of law that is both one of the most fluid areas, and one of the most secure (there are not very many people of the right and left brain types that have both technical and law aptitudes). Also, patents tend to be recession proof.

Somewhat relevant but in the opposite direction - I did a 180 into accounting. Did my previous non-accounting related job job for 2 years. Hated it, found a local MBA program that focused on credits needed for CPA and did it full time. Chose to live with my parents the 2 years vs student loans, was bearable.
Worked out well for me, I’m very successful in my job so far (8 years in). Depending on what you are looking to do, you have to deal with going into entry level positions in your new industry and reporting to younger people. That part never bothered me because I respect knowledge and talent over age, but I have spoken to others who switched that were bothered by it. YMMV.
Overall I recommend it. If you don’t like what you are doing now you may not like it the rest of your life. No point in being miserable your whole life.
I did it once. Debating doing it again. Switched from automotive engineering to Product Management. Now debating becoming an entrepreneur. I really enjoy what I do now and can see myself doing this for several years but I've always been curious about doing my own thing. So looking into this now. Really enjoyed every minute of transitioning to PM and highly recommend anyone considering switching to something they are curious about to do it. No better way to know whether you'd like it and excel in it or not.
Lol. Thanks I guess?!?! PM seems to be glamorous. The ground reality is that it is not. I am an infrastructure PM working on SaaS products. Spent a lot of time talking to people in different tech roles and found this to be well aligned with what I wanted which was a. To be an individual contributor b. NOT be a people manager c. A role with a lot of variety and autonomy d. I wanted to remain technical. It ticked all these boxes and I am pretty happy with what I do. It is a lot of work and the politics is rough but it is what it is. Happy?
Yes, from teaching to sales to recruiting. First, figure out what you want to do, and what in your current role/past has cross over to that. Take some training- there are a lot of free or very inexpensive trainings online. Join groups, organizations or meetups related to what you're looking for and network your way in.

Went from teaching to process / system implementation. Not as much of a jump, still love doing training and creating documentation 😊
Career change into accounting. Basically wanted to be able to move states with not worry about finding a job. Biggest suggestion is finding the right college program that will lead to your goals. Whatever the target schools are for the profession in your regional area Mx
I felt lost until I met my mentors who have been guiding me to build an asset, budget, pay off debt, and enjoy life! Find a mentor, someone who is where you want to be in life!
