Is it normal that assignments aren’t based on seniority? I’m a second year in lit and things are interchangeably assigned to me or the 4th/5th years (as in, usually addressed to “whichever of you can do it first”). The senior associate or partner reviews my work directly, and this scenario is similar for all my teams.

Pretty normal. The difference between junior and mid is not all that apparent in litigation. Tasks need to get done so teams don’t have time for all that military style division of labor. Just get it done!

like

Not necessarily. Gives the more junior associates a good opportunity to do substantive work.

like

There are many tasks that can be done by a second year or a fifth year but just need to be done.

like

Ya as a 5th year if the junior wants to draft something I usually just offer to review if they want me to before they send it to the partner. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.

First year trainee here. Having the standard wobbles but generally surviving.

My question is - how can I tell if I'm doing well? More specifically, what common and avoidable mistakes (specific or general) do trainees make, and what attitude or actions impress you?

Recently overheard some associates complaining about another trainee and now I have the fear... I want to get this right. Thanks in advance.

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
