I agree. It often feels like a shortcut question. When it is used well, it tests clarity and storytelling, but too often it signals poor preparation from the interviewer.
I prefer a tighter version of this question. It could be "tell me about the time in your career so far when you were the most engaged?" Or "What has been the career experience so far where you learned the most?"
Because honestly, as a hiring manager, I've already read or at least skimmed the resume. What I want to know is, how do you think about and approach your work? What are you really great at? How have you dealt with setbacks? This is much more useful info than just a dull recitation.
Honestly, with so many fraudulent resumes out there, I chat through the resume, asking for some sort of information about each role that lets me hear that they really worked a day in the life of. The number of people who talk around what they should have done there or sound like a job description not someone who lived the role is astounding. The least lazy thing to do is 'what was the project/task/thing you were most proud of when you worked at x company?' or similar depending on the role. Lets you follow up with additional questions if they don't go into any detail.

I hate that as on the spot I never really know what to say and then I feel like I ramble haha, I feel like saying just read it!
It is a bit of a weird one. I know they are looking to see what I would prioritize, and what I would add, but it's still incredibly annoying. It feels like the kind of question someone asks after googling "what questions should I ask a candidate?"
I prefer, "tell me how your experience is a good fit for this role?"
