I have observed some curious things about mainframers.
1. There are so many people, especially 5+ yoe, who don't update their LinkedIn information. People don't know what we are doing, we are literally invisible. No wonder we are so underpaid compared to the market.
2. We are reluctant to upskill at a day and age when even IBM is telling us to know Java and work on IDEs. A few months back, I posted a referral for my own team among my ex colleagues, all of whom had 8+ years of exp. The only mandatory added skill was hands-on Java. The pay was way above the market for mainframe. Not a single person volunteered, and we had to hire a Java backend dev instead.
3. Some of us are very happy writing code in Microfocus COBOL on Linux and calling it mainframe modernization. They call themselves out as super skilled during interviews and just shit their pants when I ask what exactly is modern about it.
4. We just let ourselves die out by never taking the initiative to improve our client systems, do PoCs, experiment with tools like z/OS Connect or zowe or even executing Java/Python code using BPXBATCH or zOSMF. Many of us don't even know what Rest APIs are.
It is a very sad state of affairs when it comes to mainframe in India. We have the skill, unlike in the US, which is just crying out now for lack of mainframers, but we're not doing anything about it.
Completely agree with you
Really put down Golden words here... 👍
